The titles says it all.

We're all writers here, right? So all of you understand the need to have well a rounded, balanced array of characters. Giving supporting characters details is extremely important. Normally, I can take this in stride and write out detailed characters for all of my side pieces, however, I have taken on a slightly larger number of characters and I am afraid that I might not manage to get original characters and might end up with several that are almost identical. It avoid doing this, I am beseeching you, all of my fine, fuzzy friends, to help me design characters. I will try my hardest to return the favor.

Basic Story|Species|Packs|Local History|Terrain and Important Locations

  • The story is called Sapa Koraci Odjekuju, which is Croatian for Paw Steps Resounding.
  • Most, if not all, of the names are Croatian, though there is no reason for this, beyond the fact that I admire the language.
  • As the name implies, this story is not about humans, however, the creatures do have humanoid forms.
  • It takes place before and during a war between the five packs (Planinski, Rijeka, Vatra, Sjeverni Vjetar, and Iluzija).
  • It revolves around 6-10 main characters.
    Details can be found below.

Basic Story|Species|Packs|Local History|Terrain and Important Locations

The characters in this story are a species called Kurjak Rodbinski, which translates to Wolf Kin. They can turn into humans, or at least humanoids, but they also have canine forms. Despite their name, not all of them turn into wolves.

Planinski turn into Dire Wolves, a species that died out many years ago in our world.
Rijeka turn into Arctic Wolves, a subspecies of Gray wolf in our world.
Vatra turn into Ethiopian Wolves, a unique and beautiful species of wolf.
Sjeverni Vjetar turn into Coyotes, a slightly smaller canine that is agile and smart.
Iluzija turn into Jackals, a clever cainine with a bad reputation.

Kurjak Rodbinski are born in litters of two or three, though usually only one of the pups make it to adulthood. They live in packs with an alpha pair, whom make decisions, and the whole pack helps raise their pups. Betas are second in command, usually a male and a female that aren't always mates. The rest of the pack is either elders, warriors, hunters, gathers, caregivers/mothers, and pups. Each pack has its own mystic of sorts that predicts the future, heals, and makes suggestions to the alpha.

Each pack lives with a pack of their cainine form. Each time a litter is born to the Kurjak Rodbinski, one of their canine kin has a litter. If a litter of Kurjak is born without a canine companion, the pack almost instantly looses hope of them surviving.
The reason for this is each Kurjak Rodbinski has a Vuk Dusa Prijatelj. A Vuk Dusa is a canine born on the same day as them that travels throughout their life with them, being their closest friend and consultant on all matters.
Kurjak Rodbinski can talk to almost all animals, however, Vuk Dusa and their partners can prevent others from understanding them if they so desire.
Not all of the canines they live with become Vuk Dusa Prijatelj. Those that don't live fairly normal lives, interacting with the Kurjak Rodbinski only during ceremonies and pup births. Those that are live with their companion all of the time and have longer lives than normal.

Basic Story|Species|Packs|Local History|Terrain and Important Locations

  • Planinski
They are seen as stupid warriors to most.
Typically, they have 25-28 members to their pack.
    2 Alphas
    2 Betas
    1 Stone Teller
    2-3 Mothers/Caregivers
    2-4 Pups
    3-4 Hunters
    1-2 Gathers
    8-10 Warriors
    2-3 Elders
They take mass in warriors and the art of war. All of their pups are trained to fight from a young age. They are given a very serious mind set and usually don't laugh much around the other packs. However, in their own territory, everything is a game, even if the game gets dangerous.

  • Rijeka
They are seen to be strong hunters to most.
Typically they have 27-32 members in their pack.
    2 Alphas
    2 Betas
    1 River Gaze
    3-4 Mothers/caregivers
    4-6 Pups
    5-6 Hunters
    4-5 Gathers
    3-4 Warriors
    3-4 Elders
They try to keep an even balance of all jobs so that everyone can have down time to study in whatever art appeals to them. They are given to random singing and being seen as almost whimsical by the other packs. However, they are very strong, simply from health, and don't take well to threats.

  • Vatra
They are seen as fierce warriors.
They typically have 25-27 members in their pack.
    2 Alphas
    2 Betas
    1 Seer
    4-5 Pups
The rest of the wolves share duties.
Because they do not have distinct ranks for each and every job, they are seen as freaks by most of their neighbors. They are all given thorough training by mentors as soon as they turn four moons old. Graduation to being full members of the pack depends on the wolf. However, they are all loyal, no matter what they are called (apprentice/pack member).

  • Sjeverni Vjetar
They are often called cowards, but they just have a really fierce pack mentality.
They always have 30 members due to specific breeding.
    2 Alphas
    2 Betas
    1 Shaman
    4 Caregivers/Mothers
    6 Warriors
    5 Hunters
    5 Gathers
    5 Elders.
They only allow reproduction when one of the hunters/warriors/gathers/caregivers says that s/he wants to retire. They are all very protective of each other and will attack at the slightest jib to one of their packmates, unless their packmate laughs it off first, and they all usually have a good sense of humor. However, they can and will hold grudges for long times.

  • Iluzija
They are seen as mysterious and frightening, often used as threats to get pups to behave.
They typically have 23-25 members in their pack.
    2 Alphas
    2 Betas
    1 Shadow Life
    1-2 Caregivers/mothers
    4-5 Pups
    2-3 Warriors
    2-3 Gathers
    2-3 Hunters
    1-2 Elders
They keep to themselves most of the time and are vicious when provoked. They usually won't kill, but maiming works for them. However, they are very tender and love pups more than anything and will steal pups from other packs if they find out the pups are starving/being mistreated.

Basic Story|Species|Packs|Local History|Terrain and Important Locations

The packs have only been there for a few generations, in which time each pack as developed its own lore and histories.

Before the packs came, there was another species that walked the lands, roaming over it, but the packs know little to nothing about them, except for the occasional print left behind in hard mud.

The Vatra Pack was there before any of the others. It is said that a red and white she-wolf came to the land heavy with pups and she and her pups were the first there, and then strangers joined them. However, that is not true. The wolves that joined that she-wolf were her brother, his mate, and her old mate's brother.

One of the she wolf's friend came, and he was the one to establish the Planinski pack. He was a strong male and many of his old pack followed him, forming their pack. The Planinski and Vatra packs lived together peacefully for a long time, and then they were joined by the Sjeverni Vjectar.

Things were still peaceful, but tensely so. The Sjeverni Vjectar were already a pack that had just moved into the area. They were all very close and very quick to take offense and react sharply, since they had been chased from their last home by other coyotes. However, it soon became apparent that the other two packs were comfortable with keeping away from them.

During this period, the three packs would move randomly between the five valleys and the basin. There was more than enough room for all of them and their packs were large in number, since new members showed up often. Things were ideal. New members were sent to whatever pack would suit them best.

It is unclear whether the Rijeka pack or the Iluzija pack was formed first. The Rijeka was two bands of wolves that met in the same valley and became a pack, settling into the area, while the Iluzija pack was simply wonders that didn't join any of the other three packs and felt out numbered.

However, once all five packs were formed, it became apparent that there wasn't enough land for so many, especially with the constant influx of new comers. None of the packs wanted to send any of its members away or turn new comers away, so they decided to chase the others out. That started a violent war between the five. Almost daily, alliances changed and blood poured from wounds that were only being re-opend. The large lake in the middle of the basin, where much of their fighting turned a dull pink and the stink of death choked them almost harder than the fangs of the enemy.

Just when it seemed that they would all kill each other, five of the dead, one from each of the packs, rose. Turning to their former pack makes, they pleaded with the voices of all those past to stop the violence. When finally there was no more quarreling on the field, the five gathered in the center and told their pack mates,
"There is no honor in pointless war. So little life is left that this land can now support it. This is the crime you have committed, but this once the Gods take pity and gift you with new life and new sight.

Horrible screams rippled from the throats of five pups that had been pulled onto the battle field, too young to truly fight. They convulsed on the ground before rising up. Their gazes were now older, more mature, and not just from the gore they had witnessed. The five that had risen from the grave told the packs to follow the pups, for they knew the way. With that, they fell to the ground, as dead as they had been only moments before.

The five pups gathered their packs, making certain only the dead were left behind, and took them each to separate valleys.

The Vatra pack, saddened by the lose of their leader, was lead to the Oganj Valley, the valley with the most evergreens. There, deer and rabbits roamed everywhere. There were already caves in the walls and a few dug out from their previous summers there. It would suit their hunting style and life perfectly.

The Rijeka pack, ill from hunger and pain, was lead to the Voda Valley, a fertile area with many fruits and lots of game. There, the sweet smell of soil filled the air and many rivers cut through the earth, giving them plenty of places to swim and bath. It would suit their love of water and satisfy their hunger.

The Planinsky pack, weakened from battle and torn from lose, was led to the Hridina Valley, a valley with many conifers with high branches and cliffs. There, the elk gathered in mass and would easily be herded to the cliffs, so that hunting would be easier. It would suit their large size and need for space.

The Iluzija pack, bitter from sadness and conflict, was led to the Sjenka Valley, where the mountains were high and there was shade most of the time. Dark trees grew there and the prey was small. There, the cool shadows hid them from strange eyes. It would suit their need for privacy and their love of night.

The Sjeverni Vjectar pack, shaken from blood lose and limping with weariness, was led to the Zrak Valley, where the mountains were lower. There, high grass grew soft gold and the forest was only in random patches, but there was plenty of prey for them to enjoy. It would suit their love of the sun and their desire to roam.

The packs settled in, but it wasn't long before they all started to ask the same question. What was to become of the basin. When their voices rose in outrage that the other packs might get it, the pups spoke again, telling them,
"Only so much blood can be spilled upon the ground in one place before the place become sacred. To keep the land from becoming cursed, it shall be kept holy, by venturing there only during the four phases of the moon to meet with the other packs."

Since then, the packs gathered in the basin, hunting together and living together for four days every month, talking and exchanging news. Friendships were formed and more than one couple left the packs to keep their honor. New members were tested before all five packs before they were allowed to join. The life was easy and considered more sacred.

However, wars still broke out and many battles have been fought in the mountains, but never has one been fought in the basin.
