Pride Lions

Lencho The elder and more dominant of the two pride's males, he has a nearly black mane and bright green eyes. Protective of his family, but an average laziness, he prefers to spend most of his time on his own or with Sanga, rather than the females, except in mating season. The only time he jokes around is when he hears gossip about himself. He is nine years old.
Sanga The second of the two pridesmales. With considerable less testosterone than his companion, Sanga's mane is only a dark reddish blond. He has friendly blue eyes and a nice smile. He usually ignores the rumors about himself and Lencho, neither disagreeing nor encouraing them. He is seven years old.
Dera The oldest of the prides females, she is snow white and has been both scorned and celebrated throughout her life. For unknown reasons, she was chased from her old pride and joined Lencho's, where she gave birth to one litter of three females (Kitoko, Dalia, and Kiho). She is fourteen years old.
Thema The second oldest, a beautiful tawny lioness. She is mother and grandmother to all except for Kitoko, Dalia, and Kiho. She was the queen until Dera came, but rather than be resentful, she accepted it with calm grace. She dotes on Kitoko. Her eyes are a beautiful amber. She is twelve years old.
Lewa Thema's sister, but born from a later litter, she has never been the choice female, has an average pelt and average brown eyes. She is sweetnatured and never has a harsh word for anyone. However, she hates hyenas and will sometimes obsess over them and hunting them, because her first litter was killed by them. She is ten years old.
Kaylin Thema's oldest and one of the oldest of the females, she hates Dera and her off spring, because if they hadn't come, she was next in line for power. She is a petite lioness with dark fur and bright blue eyes. Very beautiful, but very mean. She is 6 years old.
Paki Kaylin's litter sister, she is friendly and sociable. She seems to associate more with the Wild Dogs than her own Pride though. Her fur is dark brown and she has light blue eyes, just like her sister, but she has more pale fur on her. She is six years old.
Kioni Thema's daughter from her second litter. She has a pale, tawny pelt and looked like she would be a white until she was a few months old. Her eyes are dark green. She is friendly and sweet, but doesn't seem like the brightest bulb in the box. She is four years old.
Lewa Kioni's litter sister, she is only slightly darker than Kioni and she acts like Kioni's shadow, always walking behind her and staying silent. Lewa is four with medium tawny fur and nearly black, green eyes. She is four years old.
Mansa Kioni and Lewa's litter sister, she is the same color as her mother, a warm tawny. She has her father's blue eyes. A perfect balance of her father and her mother, she is both graceful and aloof, preferring the company of the wind than anything else. She is close friends with Nepho and there are rumors about the two's relationship, but she doesn't care. She is four years old.
Nepho A stranger to the Pride, she wondered in a short while before Dera. Her fur is so dark that it is nearly black, but she has bright, hazel eyes that dance with life. She is excitable and clings to Mansa when she has to deal with others in the pride. She was nearly dead when she arrived and Mansa saved her, so she relies on her a lot. She is around four years old.
Azalee Lewa's daughter, she is one of the youngest lionesses. In appearance, she is identical to her mother, but in personality, she couldn't be more different. She is rebellious, loud, rude, abrupt, and powerful. She is only three years old.
Ayoka is Azalee's litter sister and she is the polar opposite of her. Her fur isn't the usual monotone. It fades from a very pale on her face to nearly black on her tail. Her eyes are mismatch green and blue. there are two 'cub' rosettes on her left hip. Yet, her personality is just like her mothers: submissive, quiet, invisible. She isn't even crazy. She is three years old.
The Pride Cubs They are all under a year old.
Abiba, Afia, Anana, Anane, Baba, Badu, Chipo, Cyrah, Davu, Elon, Eshe, Hada, Ja, Jira, Kainda, Kaula, Kia, Kunle, Manica, Nneke, Nnenia, Orma, Panyin, Reth, Saran, Sika, Tendai, Tiaret, Ulan, Yaro, Zeena, and Zuna

Prologue

Harsh gasps escaped the lioness as blood stained her beautiful white pelt. This labor wasn't like the others. It was harder, more painful, and had lasted longer. It was going on its second day and Dera wasn't sure if she could keep it up much longer.

"Dera, hold on dear.""Hush dear, it will be alright.""Just a little more.""Yeah, just a little more."

The soft voices of her Pride sisters were hushed around her. They were all gathered, comforting her with light touches and gentle licks. She knew that despite the fact that she didn't share their blood, any one of them would bare this pain for her if they could. It meant the world to her, to belong there, but she was terrified that she would die there as well.

A sound of pain escaped her maw. This was the first that she had let out, but the contractions were steadily growing more painful and more taxing on her frail body. The pain, in fact, was enough to put her out of her mind.

Before her there was a large, rolling, golden plains. It was healthy and beautiful, but barren, unmoving other than the wind. There wasn't even the slight flicker of insect wings.

Abruptly, a blackness rose up around her, consuming her and as she fell into it, crying for salvation, Dera felt lost and threatened, but the feeling was swiftly replaced with a sense of strength. Around her, she felt a presence and below her, she felt cool stone, supporting her and bounding her to reality.

    "Welcome, Bearer."

Dera attempted to flinch back from the loud voice, but her delicate paws were cemented to the hard stone. She was bound in place by an unseen force. Everything, in fact, was unseen. It was just a steady black around her.

"Wh-who are you?" Dera demanded, her voice breaking and shaking despite herself. She was normally braver, more easily handled under pressure, more in control of her dreams. This dream, however, seemed to stir a memory. She couldn't recall it clearly and it disturbed her.

Slowly, light filtered in, illuminating, at first, only a beautiful, silvery lioness. The lioness's eyes opened slowly and she looked at Dera, smiling, her lavander eyes catching the light wickedly. Her tail flicked as she told the white lioness,
    "You know who we are."

The light spreaded farther then, lightly up the pelt of a golden lioness. Her eyes snapped open, blazing a violent green. When they caught the light, the looked like emerald fire. Her tail lashed behind her as she declared, "We are the Spirits."

"We come bearing a message," a third voice said as slowly, she was illuminated. She was a brown lioness with golden eyes. Her tail swayed behind her continuously and slowly. There was something gentle about her.

"You are bearing the future," a strong voice told her. The light flared abruptly, exposing two male lions. One was white with a black mane, while the other was black with a white mane. Their eyes were mismatch, green and blue. They were twined together like snakes, gazing directly at Dera. It was unclear which spot as they added, "You are carrying the children of fate."

"The seers," a young voice said. It was a small, dark lion cub that spoke, completely androgynous. It had dark, nearly colorless eyes and a red brown pelt.

A young male and female stepped forward, only separable by the beginnings of a mane on the male. They were both brown with amber eyes. The male's male was a warm red. Together, they said,
    "They will know."

"You just need to remember to listen."

Jerking from the darkness, Dera returned to her body. Pain filled her, but only for a second before it snapped. In a rush of blood and life, her three cubs here born. Beautiful in the most simple of ways, they were easy to be proud of. Those were Dera's final thoughts before her head fell onto her paws and her mind went blank. Not dead, just resting for the first time in a long time.

Around her, her sisters cleaned her and the cubs, tending to them with care.

Chapter One

    One Year Later...

Oe Van Die Drei Kiho110

Slowly, calmly, Kiho stalked forward. The wind rustled the reddish tawny fur on her shoulders as she kept low to the ground. The young lioness was keenly aware of everything around, from the way the light danced off the surface of the watering hole not so far away to the way the breeze moved the golden fronds before her. Her keen, green eyes missed nothing.

Nearing her prey, Kiho became super aware of the direction of the wind, blowing towards her so her prey wouldn't be alerted, the sounds she made, minim and not much louder than the air gliding silently into her lungs, and position of her prey, steady, moving slowly while trying to wake. Everything was perfect.

    "Heeya!"

With a loud shout, Kiho launched herself into the air and landed solidly on her sister's shoulders. With a hiss of joy, Kiho bit down, her teeth prickling at Delia's beautiful brown pelt. Leaping off of her, she pounced at Kitoko, her elder sister. Kiho's beautiful, green eyes danced with amusement as she swiped at Kitoko's glossy chocolate pelt. Kiho's shining, white claws were carefully sheathed.

Kitoko lay in the tall grass, her pelt absorbing the heat of the African sun. Delia was beside her, and Kiho out rummaging around, doing Ouma knows what, probably sneaking around the brush. With a loud yawn, Kitoko rolled over onto her other side, now facing Delia.

“I wonder where our youngest ran off too.” Kitoko’s head lifted at the yell of her youngest sister. A soft chuckle emanated from her chest as her pelt was ruffled by her sister’s paw. Kitoko rose from the ground, her muscles stretching as she batted her own paw out, catching Kiho on the shoulder. Well, at least she had found Kiho or rather the youngest had found them. Kitoko darted over towards Delia and batted her on the head playfully before darting out of reach.

Oe Van Die Drei Dalia11

Dalia blinked her eyes open, somewhat bleary as she had been sleeping, as her eldest sister's voice drifted over to her. Shaking her head briefly, she gazed around, spotting her younger sibling stalking towards Kitoko. Chuckling when she was pounced on, the laughter soon turned to a playful snarl as Kitoko batted at her head.

"Why am I being dragged into this?" She asked even as she lunged at Kiho and knocked her over, nuzzling her cheek before dancing away. Spotting Kitoko's tail, she pounced on it. Her paws stomped and batted at the tip carefully. If she hurt Kitoko, she wouldn't hesitate to smack Dalia upside the head a few times. Dalia figured she had enough brain damage as is with Kiho jumping at her all the time.

Finally bored with her sister's tail, Dalia settled back down. Soon, she would move again to go stand in the water to cool down a bit like usual. She wondered if she could persuade her siblings to join her this time. A yawn left her and her head rested back on her paws, her eyes drifting shut every now and then while she watched Kitoko and Kiho play.

Oe Van Die Drei Kiho110

Kiho winced at the harsh hit to her shoulder, but laughed, knowing that Kitoko wasn't trying to be rough. When the attack was turned to Dalia, Kiho eagerly leap at her sister, biting and clawing at her playfully, always mindful not to hurt her.

As their game dwindled to a halt, Kiho flopped down. The heat was vision, scorching the ground and her pelt. Nearby, she could her the older lionesses taking care of the young. It was so familiar that it was boring. Kiho hated this. She hated feeling trapped here by the heat and by her reliance on the Pride. Looking at her sister, Kiho wondered if she could talk them into fleeing with her. Maybe with them, she would be able to survive.

Noticing Dalia's eyes drifting closed, Kiho walked over to her. Without any grace, she flopped down on her with a dramatic groan. Feeling the heat rolling off her sister's pelt, however, she instantly slipped off of her. "I'm gonna die from this," Kiho hissed dramatically.

Kitoko flicked her tail as Delia started playing with it. Kitoko stood her paws carrying her across the hot ground and into the shade of a nearby tree. A yawn escaped her jaws, her teeth flashing white in the sun that peeked through the leaves. Her eyes slowly drifted close, a breeze barely moved the grass, but was cooling nonetheless. Kitoko opened one eye as she heard splashing amusement laughing through her as she saw Kiho, whom she had dubbed ‘Drama Queen’ fall over into the water. Kitoko perked her head up as an idea came to her. Leaping up, she bound over to her sisters splashing them both when she got close.

“I have an idea. Why don’t we go exploring?” She was bored and had a sudden burst of energy she wanted to be rid of.

Dalia groaned when Kiho laid on her, sighing in relief once she was off. Normally, she was okay with the cuddling and closeness of her siblings, but today was too hot. Hauling herself to her feet, she wandered over to the water and laid back down on the very edge of it so she was only covered by two inches of water. Cooling down almost instantly, Dalia yawned loudly, rolling over on her back and rubbing back and forth in the mud. It was a trick she had learned when she was little and it kept her cool even after she left the water.

Jerking back and shaking her to head to get the water out of her eyes, she growled playfully at Kitoko. "Where do you suppose we go to explore on this blistering day?" Now that she wasn't nearly as hot, Dalia felt a sudden spurt of energy. Leaping up and onto Kitoko's shoulders, she clamped her jaws around her sister's neck briefly before simply sliding off and into the water. She gazed up at Kitoko, flicking her tail back and forth impatiently.

Oe Van Die Drei Kiho110

"We can't go exploring," Kiho instantly chirped, rolling to her paws, farther away from the water. She didn't mind it. She would swim when she was too hot, but she hated getting splashed. It made her want to do horrible, violent things. Things that the pride would banish her for.

Standing and shaking herself, she told her siblings, "I don't particularly care for the idea of the den mothers all getting in our faces because we left without telling them...again." Kiho was always at ends with all of the den mothers, since she was prone to causing trouble and disappearing for days. She loved it, but she wasn't eager to have to bicker with them when the weather was so hot.

"If only you were so well behaved all of the time," a deep, rich voice said.

Turning, Kiho spotted the slender, snowy form of their mother. With a delighted sound, she bound over and nuzzled her. "Uma! I missed you," she whined in a playful tone.

Kitoko growled playfully at Delia as she felt teeth around her neck. She jumped onto Delia nipping the younger's shoulder. Her ears twitched at her mother's voice.

"Uma!" Kitoko bound over to her mother, her tongue flicking out to lick her mother's soft fur. Kitoko yawned as she walked back to the shade. Dust rose around her as her body flopped gracefully to the ground. She sneezed as dust tickled her nose. Twisting her body, she started cleaning herself.

Delia huffed and staggered to her feet. The den mothers were always on their cases...Well, usual it was Kiho that they were after since she was the trouble maker, but it was no fun to do anything without her sisters. At the sound of their mother's voice, her head came up and a rough purr started.

Bounding over, she nuzzled her mother, pushing her sisters out of the way since she had gotten there last. "Uma! What have you been doing? We missed you and we are bored." She considered pouting but decided it was something only a cub did. Instead, she sat down in the shade, waiting for Uma and Kiho to join them.

She gazed at the water, intrigued once again by the swirls and the way the light hit it. While her sisters didn't mind the water, she loved it. Loved laying in the shallow parts, running through the deeper ones; there wasn't any parts deep enough for her to swim, for which she was thankful for. She didn't know how to swim and didn't feel like dying.

Kiho remained nuzzled against her mother, moving only when Delia pushed at her. The golden red lioness was a momma's girl to the core and loved her more than either of her father's.

"I have been hunting and tending to those young enough to still need a keeper," Dera told Delia in a calm, warm tone.

When Dera moved towards the shadows, Kiho did the same, remaining close to her mother. Kiho had always wished that she was a white lioness like her mother, but she was also glad that her pelt was unique from the other pride lion's. None of them had such a vibrant pelt...at least that is what Kiho told herself. The truth in her thoughts was up for debate.

"Get up my beautiful daughters," Dera told her two daughters. Her tail flicked as she told them in a proud voice, "You three shall go on your first hunting trip today."

Kiho froze as the news. They would be...hunting? Her eyes went round and a happy, deep sound escaped her. Though they had been brought small animals to kill before and to practicing hunting before, they had yet to be taken actually hunting.

[[XD That's because it isn't the mother's name. Uma means mother. Dera is the mother's actual name. *sadface* didn't you read my first post?]]

Kitoko chuckled at Deila’s sudden bout of hyperactive energy. Their uma never really changed routines, so why Deila always asked was beyond Kitoko. Kiho was better at hiding her emotions, but hey, everyone had their points and faults. Kitoko smiled watching her family walk towards her, their chatter peaceful to Kitoko’s ears.

Kitoko stood as the three approached. Kitoko froze, shock holding her, as her mother’s words reached her ears. Had her ears heard correctly? Where the den mother’s finally thinking of them as grownups? Her gaze met her mother’s for confirmation, the excitement held at bay. However, she couldn’t contain it when she saw the answer in the eyes of her mother.

Letting out an excited sound, Kitoko hopped around the tree once before regaining her composer. She had to calm herself. Her eyes kept the excitement as her mind regained control of her body.

“When do we leave? Are you going to teach us? Where are we going?” The words tumbled from her mouth without breath in between.
