Of the Mountains Cougar_by_HodariNundu
A young, female mountain lion stalked through the tall grass. She had been roaming the trees when she caught sight of a flicker of white. Her curious nature took her from the hunt to investigate. Keeping low, her ears pinned back, the female watched as a young, white deer frolicked about, completely care free. Slowly, so very slowly, she got into range. For a moment, she waited, pausing to be certain that the creature hadn't noticed her, and then she leapt out. With two mighty bounds, she was on top of it.

With a mighty roar, she lunged down towards the frail neck. Beneath her, the animal screamed and flailed, its hooves striking her chest and legs rapidly. Abruptly, she stopped, pressing a paw to the frail shoulders to keep the creature in place.

"What are you doing, Tasunke?" Yantse demanded, her voice just quieter than the vicious roar she had let out a moment ago. The creature beneath her paw froze at her voice. Letting her up, she nudged the fawn roughly and demanded, "Are you trying to get killed!? You can't just hop around without paying attention! What if it had been some other mountain lion? What if it had been a wolf? How many times must we go through with this!?"

The young white fawn stared at her with shocked, terrified eyes. Though she was free now, she hadn't moved to stand, trembling too greatly. Her large, gentle eyes were filled with fear. She attempted to speak, but her voice faltered, coming out as nothing more than meek, scared sounds.

Huffing, Yantse gave up on the idea of ever eating fresh meat. She would just have to scavenge until Tanunke was old enough to look after herself. Grumbling about starving to death, she curled up around the white, shaking form. Lying her head on the small back, she sighed again. Some part of her felt bad, but another part of her knew that she shouldn't comfort the young deer. It wouldn't get the message through. This was a dangerous world. The foolish and carefree had no place in it.

Ryoga laid soundly in the grass, hiding his masculine figure. His muscles were lax as he stared at the scene before him. He licked his lips as the female pounced on the fawn. He would definitely be stealing her kill. But there was one problem. Th fawn was not killed. Instead she let it free. He pressed his ears tight to his head and watched for a few more moments. The lioness rested her head on the creature's back, as though it was showing endearment. Ryoga was furious and yet confused. Why would a lioness give up such a delicious morsel. Finally he realized she wasn't going to kill it. He didn't know what to do, but before he could decide, his stomach chose for him. It let out a deep grumble, feeling as though his stomach was eating itself. It had been a very long time since he had actually eaten a nice meal. There was no time for waiting anymore. She was considerably smaller than him, so it should be easy to take the meat from her.

He tensed all his strong muscles and got his body close, ready to pounce. Finally his body and mind were in tune. Without a sound or a warning, he applied pressure to his hind legs as he pounced towards the female and the fawn. Ryoga stopped right before the female's face. "If you won't eat this tasty treat, then I will!" he growled with anger as he perked his ears and raised his tail, asserting his dominance. His let out deep growls, alerting them to the seriousness of the situation. He slowly padded around them in a small circle. He could smell the fear of the leaf eater, and the female qualities of the lioness. It had also been a really long time since he had an opportunity to mate, but his stomach was overpowering any other feelings that might arise from the increase of hormones.

Catching the scent of another mountain lion, Yantse tensed up. Rasping her tongue over the young fawn once, she attempted to sooth the already startled creature. She didn't need her bolting too soon. "Tasunke, wait until the right moment," Yantse instructing her softly. This was not the first predator to come after the unique little scrap of meat, probably wouldn't be the last either. Already, she had taught the fawn to wait until they were fighting to bolt and hide herself. Rising slowly to her feet, she searched the forest for the figure and soon saw him: a large male with an obvious advantage in this fight. Sighing, she once again wished Tasunke was smart enough to hide herself. Stepping between her fawn and the male, she kicked the creature so it scrambled to its feet.

"I will have to warn you against that," she told him, her tone mockingly mournful. Her ears went back and she prepared herself to fight. "I would suggest leaving so neither of us takes unnecessary wounds. Prey is already scarce and a limp won't help you." She felt Tasunke scramble under her belly and sighed softly to herself. She loved the fawn, but this was not to her advantage. Now she had to worry about stepping on her. Still, her blue eyes didn't shift away from Ryoga's face as she turned slowly to make certain he was no closer to the little fawn. Abruptly, she lunged at him with a snarl, aiming to sink her claws into his shoulders as her powerful jaws went straight for his face. If she blinded him, that was a rather permanent fix.

Tasunke may have been difficult most of the time, but she was smart enough to know that she had to bolt, and she did. As soon as Yantse lunged, she ran for the trees, knowing to move quickly and quietly. Of course, the young lioness knew the male would have more interest in the prey than her, so she made certain to bite down as hard as she physical could to keep his attention on her.

Ryoga was amused by her attempts to stop him from what he wanted to do. He chuckled, which then turned into a hearty laugh. Anyone standing by could hear the power from within his chest. But the laughing stopped once she actually lunged at him. He watched the fawn run from the scene. He growled loudly, not from the pain, but the anger he felt from watching his easy kill get away. "Why protect something so weak? Why don't you just do the smart thing and birth your own cubs!" he roared as he latched on massive claw into her back. He shook her off his body and pressed his massive paw on her chest, pinning her to the floor. "You follow me and you will die as well!" he growled under his breath. Before she could utter a word, he pounced towards the direction of the fawn. He would easily be able to track the white hopping around in the forest. It wouldn't matter how much of a head start the creature got. He would surely catch up and make his kill, giving him a rather enjoyable meal.

Death was better than losing the white fawn. The mountain lioness had decided this long ago, when she had faced down a full pack of wolves for the flighty creature. It was no surprise to her when she sprung after Ryoga as fast as her body would allow. She was battered, yes, but smaller and used to this area, as the delicate creature couldn't roam as far as her. In only a few minutes, she caught up and launched herself upon his back. Her paws landed on his shoulders as her chest hit his back. Instantly, her fangs flashed towards his throat. She hadn't killed before, but from this angle, she knew she could. Still, something made her hesitate. The knowledge that the death was unneeded always made her hesitate.

Ahead, the fawn had already hidden itself well. A quick roll in dung and then curled up under bushes; it wasn't perfect, but the fawn had picked near another herd. Yantse had taught her to do as much. She was always supposed to go near other deer, let one of them die rather than die herself. It upset her, but when she had been taught that, she had silently learned to obey. Life was precious, and if she was told to cling, Tasunke would cling.
